Dinner at いろはかるた Izakaya 居酒屋| Kyoto Japan

Izakaya居酒屋is a place where Japanese gather together for eating, drinking, smoking and talking. To be more precise, it is a place for them to drink, drink, drink and drink non-stop. Since it is a place for drinking, many Izakaya provide drinking buffer (飲み放題 "nomihoudai") package. If you are to order a set package, many of them come with appetizer, main dishes, salad, dessert and some side dishes. The drinks are buffet type and you can choose from soft drink, wine, cocktail, sake and others. Most of them are alcohol. I have visited to many of the Izakaya during the stay in Japan. Most of the times were attended farewell or welcoming party with Japanese colleague. I have no chance to take good photo during dining with them.

Mother's Homemade Kaya Jam Recipe

I have this homemade kaya recipe from my mother while she made kaya jam last Sunday. The ingredients used are very simple but I was impressed with her patient during the cooking process. It was really time consuming to make the delicious kaya. You need to stir the mixture continuously during the cooking process in order to get the smooth texture kaya.

Goma Dango ごまだんご | Japan Kinkakuji

Is anyone like the Cha Dango that I shared on previous post? Now, I would like to introduced another type of dango. As I mentioned before, there are varities of dangos that can be found in Japan, one is the Cha Dango which is made with green tea. The second type of dango that I am going to share now is black and white version of dango. What is the black and white ball ball stick shown in the picture? Well, the white balls are the dangos which are plain dangos while the blacky is kuro goma (black sesame). It doesn's look tempting to me at all, but since there was a free tasting sample, why should I miss the chance ?

Manneken Belgium Waffle | Japan

I love to eat waffle especially when the waffle just comes out hot from waffle maker and waffle with peanut butter is always my first choice. I have even tried to make my own waffle with my sister in law's waffle maker which bought from Cosway. My homemade waffle didn't turn out as good as those sell outside. To me, good waffle should be crunchy outside and soft inside. Of course the taste should be delicious too. Recently, I get to know about Belgium Waffle after my first try in Osaka Railway Station, Japan. The strong fragrance from the waffle store caught our attention. We bought a piece of plain waffle which costs 126 yen (about RM4.50). The Belgium waffle was very crunchy and tasted heavenly!

Onigiri_5

Onigiri お握り or 御握り, is a Japanese rice ball made with white rice and shaped into traingular or oval shapes, it can be wrapped in seaweed (nori 海苔). An onigiri is normally filled with pickled ume (umeboshi 梅干), salted salmon, katsuobushi, kombu, tarako, or any other salty or sour ingredient as a natural preservative. You can easily get it from convenient stores in Japan.

I made an onigiri in Japan, with a very simple ingredients and procedures to follow. Those ingredients can easily get in Malaysia too.

Ingredients:

Onigiri_2

1. Japanese white rice
2. Salted salmon
3. Seaweed
4. Katsuobushi, seaweed, sesame mixture

I do not use any vinegar in the rice, just a plain rice. After cook the Japanese rice, put a scope of rice into the onigiri mold, then put in some salted salmon, cover with another scope of white rice. Use a slice of seaweed and wrap the rice ball. Ready to eat!

LycheeCheese_9First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to wish my nephew a Happy 1 Year Old Birthday.

This is the first birthday cake for him in his life. Bake by me!!! So proud of me... Smile

A simple Lychee Cheese Cake with my own creation and with symbol "1" representing his age.

This time I choose to use Australia brand cream cheese, it is cheaper (half the price) compare to Philadelphia brand cream cheese. Conclusion, I will use back Philadelphia for the next cheese cake as I prefer heavier taste cheese.Tongue out

Fresh cream that I used for this cake, taste not so sweet, quite nice. "Value Pride......"

Next, let's see how I assembled the "1" year old cake. Firstly, bake a square shape sponge cake. (recipe refer here). To make the number "1" shape, cut the square cake and arrange according to the diagram shows below. Cut horizontally into half to spread cream cheese and lychee. Arrange and decorate accordingly.

A "box" created by Camus, I found that it is a very good idea to make the box using alluminium foil and keep the cake fresh.

FriedBihun"Firstly, put some oil, when the oil is hot, put in chopped garlic, follow by prawn or meat, after the meat is about to cook, put in bihun, then put......".

Standing in the kitchen and watching at mom frying bihun seems to be easy, step by step instructions were taught by this lovely mom to her daughter who does not know how to cook well. Her daughter forgot what her mom taught after walk out from the kitchen. And yes, the "daughter" here refers to me! But I am very thankful to have a great mom who can cook very delicious meals for her husband and children. Questions of "What to eat later? Where to eat?..." do not come across me as I have a great mom who will prepare lunch and dinner for us every day. However, this is no longer applicable to me during the time I stay alone at outstation. I have to cook and eat on my own. Cry

Scallop_2The picture shows the scallop I bought last week. I found it in the super market near my company (in Japan). It was a fresh scallop, 120yen each, but I get it for the price of 60yen (about RM2.20) after 50% of discount.

After wash, I cooked it together with the shell directly above the gas, the shell acts as my cooking pan and the scallop was my main dish Wink . While it was about 80% cooked, I added soy sauce to the scallop and ate with rice after cooked.
