Homemade Yakitori 焼き鳥 | Japanese Skewered Chicken

I would like to share a very simple dish that I cooked yesterday, homemade yakitori. Yakitori (焼き鳥) is a Japanese type of skewered chicken. It is made from few bite-sized chicken meats, skewered on a bamboo skewer over charcoal.

Cha Dango 京の茶だんご | Japan

Dango is a Japanese dumpling made from mochiko, rice flour. There are many varieties of dango in Japan and normally three to four dango are often served on a skewer. The texture of the dango is very similar to chinese glutinous flour ball (tang yuan), especially the plain dango, not only the texture, the taste is almost close to tang yuan. On this post, I would like to share on the Cha Dango from Kyoto, Japan 京の茶だんご. It is a green tea flavour dango where only sells in Kyoto area. I have never see this brand of dango in Tokyo.

Goma Dango ごまだんご | Japan Kinkakuji

Is anyone like the Cha Dango that I shared on previous post? Now, I would like to introduced another type of dango. As I mentioned before, there are varities of dangos that can be found in Japan, one is the Cha Dango which is made with green tea. The second type of dango that I am going to share now is black and white version of dango. What is the black and white ball ball stick shown in the picture? Well, the white balls are the dangos which are plain dangos while the blacky is kuro goma (black sesame). It doesn's look tempting to me at all, but since there was a free tasting sample, why should I miss the chance ?

Nakau なか卯 | Japanese Style Fast Food | Japan

Are you looking for something cheap in Japan? Of course, the “something” here means FOOD. Well, I think most of the people know that dining in Japan is not cheap, but if you are good in dig hole (korek lubang), you can actually get a cheap meal too. One of the “hole” I found is to walk around “super market” (I used to call those convenient market/mini market/super market hampalang (all) as super market), most of the “super market” selling bento 弁当 (lunch box). When come to certain time, few hours before the food is expired, they will have discount on the bento. Grab one!

FriedBihun"Firstly, put some oil, when the oil is hot, put in chopped garlic, follow by prawn or meat, after the meat is about to cook, put in bihun, then put......".

Standing in the kitchen and watching at mom frying bihun seems to be easy, step by step instructions were taught by this lovely mom to her daughter who does not know how to cook well. Her daughter forgot what her mom taught after walk out from the kitchen. And yes, the "daughter" here refers to me! But I am very thankful to have a great mom who can cook very delicious meals for her husband and children. Questions of "What to eat later? Where to eat?..." do not come across me as I have a great mom who will prepare lunch and dinner for us every day. However, this is no longer applicable to me during the time I stay alone at outstation. I have to cook and eat on my own. Cry

And, my turn to fry bihun has come when I staying in Japan. I have snapped the step by step on how to fry bihun and wish to share with blog's readers. Refer to following:

Firstly, prepare the ingredients. Ingredients I used here are fish balls, crab stick, beansprouts, bihun (soak for about 10-15 mins) and minced meat. You may use any ingredients that you like.

Also, prepare sauce in a small bowl. I used oyster sauce, soy sauce, pepper and some water to make the sauce.

After prepared the ingredients, we can start the cooking. First of all, put some oil into the frying pan, if you like garlic, you can put some chopped garlic after the oil is hot. Then put in the minced meat and stir evenly.

Next, put in the fish balls and crab stick. Stir again.

When the meat and fish balls are about to cook, put in the soak bihun and pour in the sauce you prepared earlier.

Tips: It is easier to mix all the ingredients with the sauce evenly if you mixed well the sauce with some water first. That is why we prepare the sauce in a bowl at the beginning stage.

After that, pour in the beansprouts.

Stir evenly until the beansprouts is cooked. Remove and serve in a plate.

Finished! This is my first fried bihun during my stay in Japan.
