Pepper Lunch | Japan

It is now a Hanami season in Japan (during March and April) and for many Japanese, this is the best time of year. The cherry blossom (sakura) trees all over Japan come in to bloom for about seven to ten days. This is also a great time for people to hold outdoor parties to view the sakura. The name “Hanami” says it all, hana means “flower” and mi is “to look”.

Japanese Rice Ball Onigiri おにぎり

Onigiri お握り or 御握り, is a Japanese rice ball made with white rice and shaped into traingular or oval shapes, it can be wrapped in seaweed (nori 海苔). An onigiri is normally filled with pickled ume (umeboshi 梅干), salted salmon, katsuobushi, kombu, tarako, or any other salty or sour ingredient as a natural preservative. You can easily get it from convenient stores in Japan. I made an onigiri in Japan, with a very simple ingredients and procedures to follow. Those ingredients can easily get in Malaysia too.   Ingredients: 1. Japanese white rice 2. Salted salmon 3. Seaweed4. Katsuobushi, seaweed, sesame mixture I do not use any vinegar in the rice, just a plain rice. After cook the Japanese rice, put a scope of rice into the onigiri mold, then put in some salted salmon, cover with another scope of white rice. Use a slice of seaweed and wrap the rice ball. Ready to eat! I added some katsuobushi, seaweed, sesame mixture with the white rice. This is a very easy onigiri recipe. You can try it too!

1 Year Old Lychee Cheese Cake | Happy Birthday to My Nephew

This is the first birthday cake for him in his life. Bake by me!!! So proud of me... A simple Lychee Cheese Cake with my own creation and with symbol "1" representing his age.     This time I choose to use Australia brand cream cheese, it is cheaper (half the price) compare to Philadelphia brand cream cheese. Conclusion, I will use back Philadelphia for the next cheese cake as I prefer heavier taste cheese. Australia brand cream cheese Fresh cream that I used for this cake, taste not so sweet, quite nice. "Value Pride......" Value Pride fresh cream Next, let's see how I assembled the "1" year old cake. Firstly, bake a square shape sponge cake. (recipe refer here). To make the number "1" shape, cut the square cake and arrange according to the diagram shows below. Cut horizontally into half to spread cream cheese and lychee. Arrange and decorate accordingly. Square sponge cake How to make a "1 year old" cake from a square sponge cake? Cut the cake horizontal into half Spread cream cheese mixture and lychee Completed "1 year old" cake A "box" created by Camus, I found that it is a very good idea to make the box using alluminium foil and keep the cake fresh. Handmade cake box Don't waste the "purple portion" sponge cake, I used them to make smaller triangle cake. Hi-tea cake

ColdSoba_7Soba is a kind of brown noodles made from buckwheat flour. Cold egg soba is noodles in cold sauce with wasabi, scallions and raw egg.

I have never wanted to try the cold soba here as the egg serves in the cold soba is totally raw. I am afraid of the egg smell if it is eaten raw and dare not challenge myself to eat raw egg except if the raw egg is use to make tiramisu. Tongue out

Somehow, on past few weeks, we stepped into an old soba and udon shop. Since Camus wanted to try something special in Japan, Japan local food, hence we ordered cold egg soba. Unsure about how to order cold egg soba in Japanese, after talking and describing what we wanted to the Taukeh Soh, finally we got what we want.

This was how the cold soba served. At first, the cold sauce was pouring on the soba in a bowl, sprinkled with scallions, then raw egg and finally added wasabi at side.

The egg was beaten and mixes well with the soba before eating. Surprisingly it was delicious! No raw egg smells at all and wasabi was added to enhance the taste. It was really a wonderful experience in Japan. The shop is just located beside Hitotsubashigakuen station.

Wonder what else that I can try in Japan before I go back to my lovely hometown in Penang. Many of the traditional foods in Japan are delicious and most importantly, they can't be easily found in Malaysia. Those are the foods that I want to try out.
