USSR Restaurant | Harbour Park , Langkawi

We just had a short trip to Langkawi recently. It is an unforgetable trip with some good and bad experience. Thank God that it was a raining day on the first day when we just arrived. The weather was great and cooling, we really enjoyed it. We stay at Berjaya hotel, it is a very relaxing resort that can temperary keep us away from our busy life in town. On the first night, with "suggestion" from "GPS", we got to know this Russian restaurant at Harbour Park nearby our hotel, it is USSR restaurant.

Mother's Homemade Kaya Jam Recipe

I have this homemade kaya recipe from my mother while she made kaya jam last Sunday. The ingredients used are very simple but I was impressed with her patient during the cooking process. It was really time consuming to make the delicious kaya. You need to stir the mixture continuously during the cooking process in order to get the smooth texture kaya. If this time consuming version does not suit you, go for this version, which only required less than 30 minutes to get your kaya jam ready.

Japanese Rice Ball Onigiri おにぎり

Onigiri お握り or 御握り, is a Japanese rice ball made with white rice and shaped into traingular or oval shapes, it can be wrapped in seaweed (nori 海苔). An onigiri is normally filled with pickled ume (umeboshi 梅干), salted salmon, katsuobushi, kombu, tarako, or any other salty or sour ingredient as a natural preservative. You can easily get it from convenient stores in Japan. I made an onigiri in Japan, with a very simple ingredients and procedures to follow. Those ingredients can easily get in Malaysia too.

PepperLunch_12It is now a Hanami season in Japan (during March and April) and for many Japanese, this is the best time of year. The cherry blossom (sakura) trees all over Japan come in to bloom for about seven to ten days. This is also a great time for people to hold outdoor parties to view the sakura. The name “Hanami” says it all, hana means “flower” and mi is “to look”.

I am lucky to stay in Japan during this season. Early morning on last weekend, I gathered all my things and get ready to picnic under the sakura trees with my colleagues. This was the first time I experienced picnic and hanami in Japan, it was wonderful and I was so excited!

Let me share some sakura photos which I took during my trip to Kitanomaru National Garden北の丸公園.

Well, back to the main topic, FOOD! After the hanami, we had our dinner at Pepper Lunch as we noticed that it is a special restaurant which we never go before. “It is a DIY affordable steak fast food which promises a dynamic and fresh culinary experience for everyone by presenting the novel concept of a sizzling steak. You can enjoy juicy steak brought with louder and longer sizzling sound at affordable prices.” This is quoted from Pepper Lunch website.

I ordered a set of garlic steak and it costs 880yen. The set comes with white rice as well. The steak was served in iron plate which is using a special electromagnetic cooker to cook. The iron plate will heat up to 260C in 70 seconds and remain hot for another 20 minutes.

This is a good experience I had but I was regretting to say that I overcooked the steak! It became hard and not juicy, also I forgot to cook the garlic as I was busy taking the photos causing the garlic not crunchy. Nothing much to complain, I can’t blame anyone as there is actually an instruction given to us on how to cook the steak. Too bad that I don’t understand Japanese, as a consequence, I overcooked my steak! Haha.
