Coffee Smith 咖啡史密斯 | Maritime Piazza, Karpal Singh Drive, Georgetown, Penang.

When there are more and more cafe open in Penang, I wish I could visit them one by one to enjoy a cup of coffee but I only managed to go one of them recently. It is Coffee Smith that located at Maritime Piazza, Karpal Singh Drive. We went there during Friday lunch, it was very crowded and we had to wait for a while to get our seat. The waiter gave us few copies of menu which I tought it was an advertisement booklet. I found it is quite special to printed menu in this way. After grance through the menu, I found that their foods are quite pricey. In fact most of the cafes are selling foods at higher price range nowadays. I ordered brunch set "Benny Duck Egg and English Muffin", it came with two duck eggs and ham on bread, two pieces of mini hamburger steak (very mini), fries and salad. This set includes one small cup of fruit juice and black coffee, RM24. The way they serve on "wooden plate" is special but I wonder how they clean the plate? Will it remained very clean after use for many times, will the stain leave behind the wooden material? They serve spaghetti too, Spring Vegetable Spaghetti at RM16. Hokkaido Scallops Cream Noodle at RM22. Portion was not big but taste creamy and delicious, you can find two scallops in the plate. Grilled Sandwich, Sicilion Chicken, RM14. Homecook Big and Fresh Scallop | Japan

The picture shows the scallop I bought last week. I found it in the super market near my company (in Japan). It was a fresh scallop, 120yen each, but I get it for the price of 60yen (about RM2.20) after 50% of discount. After wash, I cooked it together with the shell directly above the gas, the shell acts as my cooking pan and the scallop was my main dish Wink . While it was about 80% cooked, I added soy sauce to the scallop and ate with rice after cooked.  

 

Manual Breast Pump | MAM

I bought this manual breast pump when baby was 15 months old, with the intention of boost up milk supply, also can pump during weekend at anywhere and easier to wash as contains lesser parts. It costs RM199, and I bought it online with free shipping. MAM manual pump parts Full sets of pump This package includes one manual breast pump, one 160ml bottle, one 130ml bottle and 2 caps for milk storage purpose. For the first time I used, I feel it is hard to control as I got around 1oz only, but it was after feeding my baby. Until now I had tried more than 5 times, it was ok to me. I also tried to pump in company whereby my baby not with me for around 8 hours, pump twice in company, but gave up on that as it took me more time with less milk, and can't work while pumping as I will need to hold it, not like electric pump, I use it with handsfree bra which allow me to control keyboard and mouse during pumping. As for washing part, it's very easy as all the parts can be easily clean. As conclusion, this manual pump will able to serve me during non working day when baby is with me, it's also good to boost up milk supply and to keep another bottle of milk in stock. Sometimes I will travel around during weekend, so it is also easier to pack this manual pump for travel, easier to wash as well. It is a very good experience to try on both electric and manual pump, both have the pros and cons, I will choose which one to use base on different situation. Happy breast feeding!

I do not bake for a period of time due to no oven with me in Japan. I mentioned that I miss my smart oven in Penang from the post of Peach Cheesecake. Well, after few months of stay in my apartment, I do not realize that actually I have an oven in my apartment. It is conventional oven where it can be used to toast, grill, bake and also act as microwave oven. A friend of mine discovered this and told me that I can bake, huuray! If not, I think I won't realize that I have an oven with me. Haha..

IMG_20130721_103322After Kobe trip with wonderful kobe beef dinner on 3 years back, I have another chance to visit Kobe again to enjoy world's famous beef steak. From forum and internet, travellers' feedback on kobe beef lunch cannot beat dinner set. With previous experience which Camus and myself will never forget in our life, I decided to give lunch a try and then make a comparison between set lunch and set dinner.

I did some survey before go for kobe beef lunch, Wakkoqu restaurant has many good review. So my plan is to visit this restaurant. We arrived at Sannomiya station on that day before 12pm and would like to have short walk around that area before go for lunch. When we just arrived at Sannomiya Hankyu Station, we saw a long queue outside another kobe beef restaurant. We walked closer to look at the menu, the price is more cheaper compare with Wakkoqu. I believed it has some good reasons why people queue for the meal. We followed the queue and had our kobe beef steak lunch. The restaurant I mentioned here is Steak Land.

We were arranged to dine at second floor, they served in tepanyaki style and guests were sitted around the table while the chef will cook and serve at center area. After put order, they served us salad, miso soup, steak sauce and plain water. When they brought two big pieces of beef (for 4 serving) to the table, I was regretted with my decision made. By looking at the kobe beef, it looks not fresh with brown in colour. Oh no, my main target for this trip gone. I had to stop blaming myself at that moment and pray hard that the beef will turn out good in taste. Compare with previous kobe beef dinner, I had to agreed that lunch is really not as good as dinner.

After looking at how the chef cook the steak (obviously not as "proffesional" as our kobe beef dinner's chef), I started to enjoy my meal. I changed my mind after my first bite on the medium cook kobe beef, it was still soooooo soft and melt in mouth. With 2980yen for this set lunch, I can say I was satisfied with it at this price. Of course, if you aim for better quality and environment, I would recommend Mouriya Restaurant which we went for dinner.

After the lunch, we proceeded with our trip at Kobe area. We walked from Sannomiya to China Town, then to Harbourland. Then end our one day trip at Kobe. I wish to return again for next Kobe beef romantic dinner with my dear Camus.

Indonesia Layer Cake with Cranberries Recipe PDF Print E-mail

CranLC_1When I looked back my post on Hawflakes Layer Cake, I just realised that it has been more than one year since I last baked my Indonesia layer cake. I bought a can of butter for baking layer cake and kept until it was expired. I quickly grab it to bake for my next Indonesia Layer Cake with Cranberry.

This time, I follow exactly the recipe in my blog too, with slight modification, I change the filling to cranberries. For my hawflakes and prune layer cake, I managed to bake a total of 8 layers cake but for this one, I get only 7 layers. It was still very delicious and as good as last two cakes! I spent less than 3 hours for this cake. You can substitude cranberries with raisins too if you like as the taste of cranberries in this cake taste very similar to raisins.

Ingredients:
340g tinned butter
180g icing sugar (sifted)
1tbsp sweet condensed milk

12 egg yolk
1/2tsp vanilla essense
1tbsp brandy (optional)

100g plain flour (sifted together with mixed spice)
1.5tsp mixed spice

4 egg white

Some cranberry and red colouring

Method:

1. Cream butter and icing sugar with mixer (using k-beater) at medium speed until fluffy. Add in sweet condensed milk and continue cream until well combined.
2. In separate bowl, beat egg yolks, brandy and vanilla essense with handwhisk until pale.
3. Continue mixer at medium speed (step 1), slowly pour egg yolks into butter mixture and cream until well combined.
4. Switch mixer to low speed, add in sifted flour and mixed spice, beat until well combined.
5. In separate big bowl, beat egg white until very hard.
6. Scoop 3~5 tbsp of mixture (4) into beaten egg white, stir with spoon until combined.
7. Add (6) into remaining (4) mixture and mix at low speed until well combined.

To bake:
1. Preheat oven at 200C (TOP & BOTTOM fire).
2. Line square cake tin bottom layer with baking paper. Oil the paper to hold it well with cake tin.
3. Pour one cup of mixture into cake tin, make the layer even with spatula.
4. Bake at oven until top layer is brown. (about 6~8 minutes depend on oven)
5. When done for first layer, take out from oven, switch oven to TOP fire only. Poke cake's bubble with toothpick (if any).
6. Pour another cup of mixture to make second layer.
7. Repeat step (3) ~ (4) until second last layer, switch oven to TOP & BOTTOM fire, 180C.
8. Continue to bake last layer until brown.
9. Remove cake from oven and cool it at wire rack.

*Note1: Arrange cranberries at 3rd & 6th layer. Press lightly with toothpick after pour 3rd and 6th layer mixture.

*Note2: Take out 2 cups of mixture and add a few drops of red colouring, mix well. Pour 1 cup of red mixture on 2nd and 6th layer of cake.

Today we will check out from Baan Namping after 3 nights stay here. Today breakfast came with 2 choices, one American breakfast and one soup rice. We get one each. Soup porridge was good but compare with American breakfast, we still preferred American breakfast as the bacon tasted really good. We spent our morning relaxing in hotel and proceed to Chiang Mai city with taxi (Song Thaew) arranged by hotel's owner.

住了三晚Baan Namping,今天是时候退房了。今天的早餐有美式及饭汤两种,我们各点了一个。虽说饭汤不错吃,但比较起来,还是喜欢美式早餐, 因为培根实在是太好吃了。吃完早餐,我们回房待了大半天,才乘坐酒店安排好的双条出城去。

Taxi driver dropped us in front of our hotel in city, Baan Hanibah. This hotel located in walking distance to Sunday market, a super big and famous night market in Chiang Mai city on every Sunday. After checked in to Baan Hanibah, we booked a package to elephant show on next day, then we went to Sunday market.

双条直接把我们停在将要入住的酒店外,Baan Hanibah是我们在古城内住的酒店。这酒店和周日市场的距离不远,步行就可,挺方便的。我们登记好一切,放好行李后,让柜台服务员替我们定购隔天的骑大象配套,就往周日市场方向去。

While we were hunting for our lunch, we found one local shop selling local food. We got ourselves a bowl of Chiang Mai famous Kao Soi and tomyam seafood, together with a coconut drink.

我们走着找午餐吃,由于才三点左右,周日市场还没开,我们就步入一家卖当地食物的餐厅。看了看菜谱,点了当地著名的Kao Soi以及一碗东炎,再来一粒椰水。

Kao soi is a fried noodle in curry and coconut soup, with thick coconut taste and slightly sweet. Compare with Penang curry noodle, the coconut flavour is much stronger. Add some chilies paste if you like spicy.

Kao Soi是碗类式咖喱椰浆的汤面,面条是油炸过的,香浓带点甜味的椰浆汤淋在炸面上,非常好吃。比起我们的咖喱面,那浓椰浆来的更香滑可口,要是喜欢辣,可加入辣椒。

Tomyam is added with coconut too, delicious. It is different compare with our local tomyam, which is more towards sour and spicy.

至于东炎呢,也是加入椰浆的,非常好吃,比起我们的酸辣东炎,真的不同。

由于两碗都是椰浆汤的,吃多了开始有点腻,再加上我们的椰水,全都是椰。要是缺乏胆固醇的你,这样的一餐肯定对你有帮助。这就是我们丰富的椰浆午餐啦。

 

Wat Pra Singh is one of the most famous temples in Chiang Mai. We walked around temper without enter to temper hall as need to pay for entrance fee. There are some stalls selling cloth, CD, foods at side of the temple too. I bought myself a pant from one of the stall here.

吃饱后,我们前往Wat Pra Singh,当地著名寺庙。由于入庙是需交付入门票的,所以我们只在外面看看而已。寺庙旁边也有一些小摊口,我在这儿买了一件短裤。

We started our shopping at Sunday market after visited to Wat Pra Singh. It was really big market as mentioned by people who had been there before. Many of the things are repeated at few different stalls.

从Wat Pra Singh出来后,夜市摊口已陆陆续续开档了,我们就开始逛了起来。逛着逛着,实在是很兴奋,夜市实在是太大了,有种走不完的感觉。只是Camus的脚肿痛,走起路来很辛苦,所以走了一半路程,我们回酒店休息,又继续逛另外一半的夜市。虽说摊口很多,但很多也卖一样的东西,要是你在这挡买不成,可以在其他摊口找到。

We get some pants from here too, but mainly we bought foods from here. Wat Pan Tao and Wat Chedi Luang are located along Sunday market too, we visited these temples on Sunday night.

我们多半买吃的,食物便宜又好吃,吃得不亦乐乎。其中Wat Pan Tao和 Wat Chedi Luang是坐落在夜市的街旁,所以我们也在这时走去看看。

Spaghetti with Mushroom Sauce Recipe PDF Print E-mail

Speg_3Years! It has been years I never touch on spaghetti, never walk into Italian restaurant (except for pizza). I am phobia to spaghetti after went for Italian buffet in Japan in year 2009, the Italian buffet came with free flow of pizza and spaghetti, somehow I guess I ate too much of spaghetti, and that caused me stop spaghetti for 5 years!

Last week, sitting in office, I suddenly smeeeell spaghetti (my brain pop out spaghetti)...then feel like eating the spaghetti that Camus cooked for me about 7 or 8 years ago. Last weekend, he cooked for me again using the same recipe.

See below for the ingredients and recipe, simple yet delicious!

To cook the sauce, fried garlic and onion in pan, when both ingredients almost golden brown, pour in a can of Campbell mushroom soup, add half can of water and stir well. Add in dried mushroom which has been cut into slices after soak in water until soft. Boil everything and add in a slice of cheedar cheese. Stir evenly.

In separate pan, cook corn, crab stick and beef breakfast lean.

Cook spaghetti in boiling water until it is soft. When everything is done, serve spaghetti with mushroom sauce on plate, add corn, crab stick and beef breakfast lean. Serve hot!

Now while I am writing the post, I wish to eat another plate of spaghetti again. Next time, maybe I want to have a plate of carbonara spaghetti. Last but not least, thanks my dear for this very delicious spaghetti!
